A perfect regular season. A district championship.
And now possibly a top seed in the playoffs.
At this point it seemingly doesn’t get any better for the Westminster Christian Academy football team.
“If you would have told me this two years when I got here, I might not have believed this could have happened to us so soon,” said WCA head football coach Byron Porter.
The Crusaders have made the Division IV non-select playoffs each year since Porter arrived at WCA and now the program is undefeated after 10 games for the first time since 2010, Porter said.
“It takes a lot of things for something like this to happen and everyone has played a part and that means our coaches, players, parents and school administration. Then it also means you’re both good and lucky,” Porter added.
WCA will have at least another few days to enjoy the situation, since the Crusaders have a first-round postseason bye after defeating St. Edmund 37-22 in a district finale on Thursday night.
St. Edmund Game
Westminster rushed for 215 yards and passed for another 169 after defeating St. Edmund (8-2, 4-2).
WCA running back Kyle Horde rushed for 191 yards on 23 attempts and scored three times, while quarterback Stephen George was 8-of-14 passing.
George completed a 25-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Damien Thomas, who defensively intercepted three throws by St. Edmund quarterback Nathan Zaunbrecher.
“Those guys really played big for us, but I thought there were a lot of others who really played a big part,” said Porter.
Horde has rushed for more than 1,100 yards this season.
The Blue Jays scored first on a 23-yard, Wyatt Dubois run that ended a six-play, 46-yard drive after St. Edmund recovered an onside kick.
Just three minutes later, WCA regained the momentum with four consecutive touchdowns on a 70-yard Horde run, another of three yards by Jack Hunt, a 34-yard Mac Proffitt field goal and the Thomas reception that gave the Crusaders a 23-6 lead with 5:56 left before halftime.
Horde added his second TD on a 5 yard run before the Jays responded less than three minutes later on a 3-yard Dubois run that made it 30-14.
St. Edmund rushed for 158 yards and the Jays passed for 144.
Dubois gained 82 yards on 14 attempts, while Nathan Driggs obtained 36 on 12 carries.
Zaunbrecher passed for 121 after completing 10-of-23 attempts.
