On Wednesday St. Landry District Attorney Chad Pitre announced another successful jury trial with Brandon J. Smith, 31, being found guilty of Aggravated 2nd degree battery; Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Smith, of New Iberia was arrested May 9, 2019 for assaulting, attacking and threatening to kill his girlfriend, Devin Asiegbu. According to the D.A., Smith has an extensive criminal background. Smith will be sentenced on October 13, 2022 before District Judge Gerard Caswell.

The trial ended late at night after several hours of deliberating. In addition, criminal jury verdicts now require a unanimous decision from all 12 jurors, raising the burden on the state.

Pitre acknowledged the St. Landry Parish Sheriff investigators and thanked his prosecutors in this case, Alisa Gothreaux and Laura Garcille for delivering justice to the victim.
