Cannon Exhibit Highlights LSHOF

June 27, 2026
Cannon Exhibit Highlights LSHOF BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor (Editor’s Note: Bobby Ardoin, then 11-years-old, was seated in the southeast end zone second level the night and watched Cannon make his famous punt return on Oct. 31, 1959) For those who remember Billy Cannon or others who were never exposed to his name, a newly-arrived exhibit at the Louisiana Sports Fall of Fame depicts a Louisiana football legend whose life included fame, disgrace and ultimately redemption. The “Billy Cannon: “They Called Him Legend” audio and visual presentation that arrived at the Hall of Fame Museum in Natchitoches on May 28, doesn’t try to hide the athletic ability, awards and legal problems for Cannon, who died in his sleep in 2018 when he was 80. Hall of Fame officials accepted the exhibit which was previously on display for 14 months at the Capitol Park Museum, which is part of the Louisiana Museum…

Bordelon’s Future Is Uncertain

June 27, 2026
Bordelon’s Future Is Uncertain BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor The City of Opelousas is receiving a maximum of $125,000 from the Opelousas Downtown Development District in order to purchase an Opelousas landmark whose future will apparently be determined following a series of architectural and environmental studies. ODD made the unanimous decision to move the money over to the city on Friday, after code enforcement director Lance Ned described the tenuous condition of the former Bordelon Motors dealership whose property is being adjudicated by the St. Landry Parish government. The city already owns a building on the corner of North Main and Grolee whose roof has collapsed, in addition to the former Opelousas New Life Center, whose future has also been undecided. The Bordelon property item was not included on the original Friday meeting agenda. However ODD voted to add the item. Ned portrayed the 115-year-old building as a blighted property and…

MACA Says No To Port Barre

June 24, 2026
MACA Says No To Port Barre BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor Don’t mess with MACA. That was the message Magnet Academy Of The Cultural Arts principal Natalie Angelle delivered on Tuesday night during a St. Landry Parish School Board Financial Committee meeting. Angelle read a written statement where she said a proposal offered last week by school board member Renee Aymond to absorb MACA onto the Port Barre High campus would lead to the “dismantling” of a nationally-recognized school. Closing MACA located in Opelousas, said Angelle, could also prevent the District from obtaining grant money that is used to support some of the cultural and academic programs used to enhance school programs that are already in existence. Since its inception Angelle said MACA, a seventh through 12th grade campus, has accepted students with different academic capabilities and has a student population that attracts students from outside Opelousas. Angelle said she and…

High Water Continues, Alters Polling Places

June 24, 2026
High Water Continues, Alters Polling Places BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor From Saturday polling place relocations to voluntary evacuations, the water that is moving southward into areas of St. Landry continues to create concerns from parish officials. Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux said on Tuesday that high water on the northern side of the parish has caused state election officials to move several polling places normally located in the Morrow and Palmetto areas to nearby North Central High School. Jagneaux said precincts usually located in the Morrow and Palmetto areas are affected by the change. Persons who usually vote in precinct 1-A at the District 3 substation, 1-B at the Morrow Community Center and 1-C at the Morrow Fire District 7 station will vote at North Central. All voters who usually cast ballots at the fire station in Palmetto will also be moved to North Central, said Jagneaux. Flood Situation On…
