A two and a half hour delayed start followed by persistent rain and a dramatic finish combined to provide a unique season-opening game between Eunice High and Church Point Friday night.

It was also a contest that Eunice let slip away in the end, said EHS head football coach Andre Vige.

Church Point erased a 12-6 fourth quarter Eunice lead, as the Bears scored three times during the final five minutes and 44 seconds to assist a 26-12 victory in a game played at Bobcats’ Stadium.

“One play here and there and the outcome could have been different. We had a fumble that led to a touchdown and a tipped pass the (Church Point) receiver caught.

“This was only Week One and you don’t want to be playing at your peak right now. It was a wild night and from what I saw, everything we did wrong is correctable and can get cleaned up,” Vige said.

Vige entered the game worried about his team’s overall conditioning, since Eunice didn’t play a jamboree game last week.

“All last week I was fearful about conditioning and I thought it hurt us,” said Vige

Church Point head coach J.C. Arceneaux said conditioning is normally a key factor especially in the first game of the season.

Arceneaux complimented his team for handling the weather conditions and the delay.

Bears’ quarterback Jaden Reese had a part in all three fourth quarter Church Point touchdowns. Reese ran for TD’s of five and 10 yards in addition to throwing a 20-yard scoring pass to Kainen LeJeune.

Jaden Reese ended the game with 67 rushing yards and another 96 passing on four of seven completions.

The game was tied at six by halftime, as Tylon Citizen scored for Church Point on an 80-yard run.

Eunice quarterback Josh Brown tied it with a three-yard run with 1:55 remaining in the second period.

A three-yard run with 4:35 in the third period by Bryan Allen enabled the ‘Cats to take a 12-6 lead.
