When practices resume this week, Westminster Christian Academy head coach Travis Blaize already has his objectives in place.

Blaize is looking for offensive consistency, something he admits he didn’t often notice Friday night in a 14-8 double overtime, season-opening loss to Jeanerette.

“I certainly don’t want to take anything away from Jeanerette, but we (WCA) need to get better offensively. We get almost 300 yards of offense and we don’t score. For us it was a complete lack of execution, but I have to tip my hat to Coach (T.C. Paul). He had Jeanerette prepared and we weren’t,” said Blaize.

Statistics underline the frustration Blaize said he experienced with the Crusaders’ offense.

WCA fumbled three times and the Crusaders were intercepted once.

Consistency also wasn’t evident for WCA, after converting only six of 18 third downs and 20 percent of the five fourth down attempts.

The Crusaders were also penalized 13 times.

WCA’s only score occurred during the second quarter when linebacker Evan Lemon executed an end zone tackle for a safety.

The Crusaders obtained 231 rushing yards and another 161 passing, as WCA freshman quarterback Stephen George completed 24-of-31 passing attempts. Ten of those receptions were to senior Tyler DeJean for 78 yards, while Cameron Randell caught six for 47.

Jeanerette secured the winning points during the second overtime period when Kelbie Guillory made a leaping 10-yard catch. The Tigers’ other TD came on a 50-yard Cameron Foulcard run.
