The North Central High basketball program has another chance to capture a state basketball tournament trophy.
While the school’s girls’ team finished as a Class 1A runner-up in a championship game played Friday afternoon, the top-seeded North Central boys have the opportunity to win a state title beginning Monday when the Hurricanes meet No. 4 Lincoln Prep in a 4 p.m. tipoff at Lake Charles’ Burton Coliseum.
The remaining boys’ teams in the tournament are No. 6 White Castle and second-seeded Delhi.
North Central (31-7) defeated Logansport (93-52) and No. 9 East Iberville (88-69) in postseason games after the Hurricanes received a first-round bye.
North Central Girls
The No. 2 Hurricanes lost to top-seeded Northwood-Lena (57-40) in a state final contest played at the University Center at Southeastern Louisiana University.
North Central (22-9), which entered the state championship 12-3 since January, was attempting to win a third state championship since 2015.
Against Northwood, North Central experienced difficulty with offensive possessions. The Hurricanes committed 26 turnovers. North Central had difficulties with shooting accuracy, shooting only 22.6 percent from the field.
The turnovers were especially crucial, since Northwood used the lost possessions to score 22 points.
Senior Ya’Jaia Goudeau scored a team-high 17 for North Central.
