A six-year-old St. Landry Parish-bred thoroughbred with a penchant for come-from-behind wins, dazzled spectators that crowded into Evangeline Downs Saturday night, as she again moved off the pace and finished strong, capturing the $75,000 Turf Distaff during the annual Louisiana Legends Night racing event.
Net-A-Bear trained at Peach Tree Farms by Nora Pitre and Elaine Caroll, bumped her career earnings to $615,970 following win with jockey Tim Thornton aboard.
The Maximo Lamarche and Frederico Deltoro-owned filly now has 12 career wins in 33 starts. Net-A-Bear’s winners’ share of the Saturday night distaff run on the track’s grass turf was $45,000, according to an Evangeline Downs press release.
During one of the Legends Night featured stakes races, Net-A-Bear sat behind the leaders in fifth place as the horses began to settle after the gate release. Thornton waited as three others battled for first place before waiting for a traffic seam that developed down the stretch. Thornton used the opportunity to cut through and battle the leaders, as Net-A-Bear moved in front and then nudged the finish line 1 1/4 lengths ahead of the field, finishing in 1:36.91.
The victory at Evangeline Downs was the second in four months for Net-A-Bear, trained by Allen Landry who has noted in several interviews that his horse likes to move into contention as the race develops.
In March Net-A-Bear captured the 46th running of the $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes at the Fair Grounds.
Net-A-Bear, named after Annette Hebert, a relative of Nora Pitre, was named 2019 Filly of The Year by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Association.
Louisiana Legends Night is one of the top thoroughbred racing nights at Evangeline Downs.
On Saturday night, Legends Night featured six stakes races worth $75,000 each on a track that Evangeline Downs racing officials said was fast and firm.
