The Bloch Street Space events venue welcomed visitors for the first time at a social gathering on Thursday night, as the spacious, repurposed building bordering downtown Opelousas prepares to become a destination limited only by the imagination.
“We’re calling it a black box theatre, which means that the building can become whatever you want it to be. It’s adaptable for just about any type of performance or activity,” said co-owner Cathy Hebert, a longtime Opelousas resident who has continued investing in the city.
Hebert, a former professional ballet dancer and dance instructor with the Hebert Dance Academy, said she and other individuals spent about four years converting the former autoparts store into an event space at the corner of Bloch and North Court streets.
The Bloch Street Space, Hebert said, can be used for concerts, parties, weddings, meetings and other events which may not require larger or more traditional spaces.
There are also stairs on both sides of the building which lead to a loft which overlooks a potential performing area for bands and perhaps theatrical performances, according to Hebert.
“We think we have created something unique and eclectic, a place where there are a number of possibilities for entertaining,” Hebert added.
