Macaroni KID publisher of Acadia-St. Landry has partnered up with the local community to host a community-wide Back to School event with a supply drive.

For families facing challenges and preparing kids for back to school there are many great local organizations and community leaders hosting back to school drives to distribute supplies for students returning to school for the 2023-2024 school year. Macaroni KID publisher for Acadia-St. Landry has taken the initiative to give back to the community with a Back to School event in partnership with the Port Barre Police Department and local coffee shop Java Square. This Friday, on August 4th, Java Square will contribute $1 for every coffee purchase to go towards school supplies.

“We are anticipating a great event with community resources for local families. There are many challenges families struggle with in our community and supplying tools for kids to ensure a great start for the school year is one of them.” The local publisher has teamed up with the Port Barre Police Department through a community school supply drive with drop boxes for donations. The goal is to fill up 100 bags of basic essentials.

“Something as simple as writing utensils and paper really does make an impact on the progress and achievement of the student. In many classrooms chrome books are also used which require headphones or earbuds. Often times children don’t have these items and it can hinder their progress in the classroom. We want to ensure every child in need has the tools to help them succeed. And this isn’t limited to just school supplies.”

The Back to School event, which will take place in Veterans Memorial Park in Port Barre on August 6th, will have a representative from DentaQuest with a ‘Find a Dentist’ tool and dental hygiene kits. OGHS will have a table with a cookie-decorating station and provide Medicaid re-enrollment information. In addition to school supplies, we will also be handing out personal care bags with feminine hygiene items for teens and pre-teen girls.

The school supply bags will be distributed on a first come/first serve basis while supplies last. The contents of each bag may vary, but the goal is to supply the basic essentials and fill in the gaps for items that may not be provided through the school system. Contributions from local businesses and individuals including Java Square will help supply items needed to fulfill this goal.

Stop by at Java Square in Opelousas on Court Street this Friday for your morning coffee and support this community drive. It’s also a great opportunity to see their progress if you haven’t visited the coffee shop since their renovation.

If you would like to donate supplies you may drop off items at the Port Barre Police Department at any time until Saturday, August 5th at 3pm or contact mackidacadia@macaronikid.com.
