Customers are now purchasing items from the Opelousas Hobby Lobby retail store, while a Whataburger franchise several miles away is on the verge of selling food, according to St. Landry Parish economic officials.

Hobby Lobby, which renovated a portion of a former Stage Department Store building located on the I-49 South service road, executed a soft retail opening on Friday, said Central St. Landry Economic Development Director Buddy Helton.

Later during the weekend vehicles were seen filling the Hobby Lobby portion of the parking lot next to Ollie’s.

In a text message provided to St. Landry Now.com, Helton said that the Whataburger franchise, also located on the south service road off La. 190 in Opelousas, was originally scheduled to hold a grand opening for business Aug. 15.

Whataburger has been constructing a new building next to a proposed Billy’s Boudin Store.

Helton said the retail opening decision for Whataburger has apparently been rescheduled for a later date.
