Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual event is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. Since the event is designed to encourage reading in children and is fostered through the schools, when March 2nd lands on a weekend, the day is observed on the closest school day. For that reason two teachers from the St. Landry Charter School, Anya Iford and Ashley Semien Martin, volunteered to read to students from Northeast Elementary School on Friday afternoon. The afternoon bell rang at 2 p.m. and the students made their way to the school library where they read several stories from books written by Dr.k Seuss. The ladies were also representing the National Association of University Women whose organization also took part in the Read Across America program by presenting reading sessions in several St. Landry Parish elementary schools. See more photos below the story.
