Dear Residents of Opelousas,
I wanted to address the upcoming increase in water rates scheduled for July, and every July going forward and the implications it may have on our community.
While I understand the necessity of maintaining our water infrastructure and services, I firmly believe that these rate hikes should be reconsidered—especially until the quality of our water meets acceptable standards for consumption.
It is essential that we pay for water that is safe to drink. Many residents, myself included, find it burdensome to purchase bottled water as a substitute, and this added expense can be particularly challenging for our elderly population.
I urge local leaders to hold off on any rate increases until our water quality is improved, as it feels unjust to charge high rates for water that doesn’t meet our needs. Let’s work together to advocate for a fair resolution that prioritizes the well-being of all Opelousas residents.
