Editors Nolte: Flood relief story by Vaughn Goudeau

In the heart of St. Landry Parish where the flood waters of Avoyelles Parish are now receding a town hall meeting was held in Palmetto Monday morning. It was organized to assist those affected by recent flood waters

The spirit of community shone ever so bright as St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard and Big Cane Baptists Church joined hands to offer flood relief assistance remindng residence that help was only a call away. Among the stories that touched the deepest was that of Beatrice Stelly an 87 year old resident of Snow Road in Palmetto. She melted into tears of relief as she stepped into her home for the first time since the water rose. Thanks to the quick thinking of resident Lavonya Malveaux. Church of God Campground contacted Paerish President Bellard and within an hour assistance arrived. The self reliant lady was escorted through the flooded waters to check on her house she has cherised for decades. In the quiet country town love isn’t spoken it shows up in boats and high water trucks when it matters most.

Following the town hall meeting flood victimes lined up to receive a flat bed trailer and a box truck loadedsd with relief supplies provided by St. Landry Parish Government and Big Cane Baptist Church.
