What started out as a surprise birthday party for Elijah Duplechain erupted into the first ever NEVA Let Your Disabilities Define You festival-party organized by Jamie Cormier. She explained that she wanted to give her friend a surprise party but seeing that July is designated as Disability Pride Month it would be nice for all to celebrate a day of fun and games and hence the first ever NEVA Let Your Disabilities Define You festival-party was held Saturday at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas.
Cormier, who organized and promoted the event, made sure it was a day for all to enjoy and to come together as a community. There were games, door prizes, food, vendors, balloon artist, music and a petting zoo. The highlight of the event was the grand parade with Elijah Duplechain serving as grand marshal.
Cormier thanked all the volunteers who assisted and is hoping the festival is an annual event,
