Fast start. Easy finish.
That’s been the early season theme for Opelousas High as the 2-0 Tigers have outscored their opponents by a cumulative 104-0.
And all but 19 of those points have been tabulated during the first half.
“It’s been something that we have emphasized since this summer. We want to come off the bus with a lot of energy,” said Opelousas head football coach Harry Coleman.
After defeating Pineville 48-0 last Thursday night, the Tigers unveiled a similar performance against Mamou in a 56-0 Donald Gardner Stadium victory.
Opelousas scored on every possession.
The Tigers rushed for 249 yards and passed for another 115.
“We’ve been pushing ourselves and we’re in good shape. When you do that, it’s all going to come together,” said Tigers’ quarterback Collin Rideau.
Rideau played a significant part in driving the Opelousas offense.
During the six series when he was at quarterback, Rideau completed 6-of-9 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
Rideau also ran five times for 65 yards. Sophomore running back Joseph Clues contributed another 69 on nine carries.
Wide receiver Jaylon Owens had four receptions for 98 yards.
Coleman said the Tigers prepared carefully for Mamou (1-1).
“We looked at a lot of tape on (Mamou) and we saw that they are well coached. We knew that we were going to have to put a good plan together, which is something I thought we did,” Coleman added.
Mamou was limited to seven rushing yards and two yards passing off a pair of completions.
The Game Story
Opelousas captured the early momentum as Rideau completed a 40-yard, fourth-down pass to Owen after Mamou was forced to punt on the Green Demons’ opening drive.
That Rideau-to-Arvie connection set up a 9-yard scoring throw from Rideau to Caden Arvie two plays later.
The Tigers moved quickly again on the next possession.
In five plays Opelousas was in the end zone again as Owens caught a 24-yard pass from Rideau.
Another Rideau to Arvie completion — an 18-yarder — accounted for the third score as Opelousas kept rolling 24-0.
Clues scored his first of his two rushing TD’s with 4:37 left in the second quarter as the Tigers moved in front 43-0 at the intermission.
