(Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas is excited to announce it is one of the recipients of the 2023 Trash Receptacle Grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful.  The grant, which is funded by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor in partnership with Keep Louisiana Beautiful, is designed to prevent litter and beautify communities across the state.

The grant, which was submitted by Opelousas Tourism, will provide six new industrial trash receptacles for the city which will be primarily placed around Le Vieux Village/ Farmers Market and downtown near City Hall.   Through the Trash Receptacle Grant program, KLB will distribute 879 receptacles to 98 organizations, a $675,000 value, in 40 Louisiana parishes. “The more we offer ways for citizens to properly dispose of their trash, we have a better chance at keeping our communities clean and inviting,” said Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor.

Recipients of the trash receptacle grant will perform post installation litter assessments to compare to their pre-install assessment data. This data will be made available to the public once complete. The purpose of the Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) Trash Receptacle Grant is to reduce litter in public spaces by providing high-quality trash receptacles in communities throughout Louisiana. Data collected by KLB over the last several years shows a reduction of litter by 56% in areas where trash receptacles are properly installed and maintained.
