Billing and Online Bill Pay Scams are often used to access your bank account and defraud you of thousands of dollars.
The Cable Billing Scam
A scammer calls claiming to be a representative from a cable or a utility company, who advertises a promotional savings opportunity for a reduced monthly payment, as long as you pay upfront with an Gift Card. Often these callers appear to have information about your services and use spoofing technology to make the contact phone number appear legitimate.
The Bill Pay Scam
We have not had any reports of this scam but in this case you receive an email or phone call from an individual claiming be a representative from a utility company or other company, who claims you owe a past due amount but can make a payment using gift cards or money grams. Your utility company will send you a past due bill on official letterhead. Call your utility company directly using the phone number listed on your bill to report this.
