The historic Venus house at Le Vieux Village is getting some much needed attention. Last Thursday, rehab construction began on the house, which dates back to 1791.

In February, staff noticed the exterior of the house as well as the walls inside the house were leaning. The fireplace was also damaged. While the home was scheduled for repairs, rehab work was expedited.

The damages to the home were presumed to be from high wind gusts that occurred in February. The Venus house is listed on the National Register, the Louisiana African-American Heritage Trail and is one of the oldest Creole homes of its kind west of the Mississippi.
