CONGRESSMAN CLEO FIELDS LAUNCHES “CONGRESS TO THE
CLASSROOM” WEEKLY DISTRICT SERIES REACHING 52 SCHOOLS ACROSS

THE SIXTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Cleo Fields announced the launch of Congress
to the Classroom, a year-long district initiative that will bring him to 52 schools from
kindergarten through college across Louisiana’s Sixth Congressional District over the
span of the year.
The series is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of government, highlight
the importance of education, and encourage lifelong civic engagement by connecting
young people directly with their elected representative.
“Education has always been and will always be the cornerstone of our society,” said
Congressman Fields. “When students are exposed early to how government works and
understand the role they play in shaping communities, they are empowered to become
informed, engaged citizens.”
Congress to the Classroom builds on Congressman Fields’ decades-long commitment to
education and public service. While serving in the Louisiana Senate, Congressman Fields
chaired the Senate Education Committee and was instrumental in advancing key
education reforms, including the passage of legislation that made kindergarten
mandatory in Louisiana, expanding access to early learning and setting students on a
path toward academic success.
Since rejoining Congress in January of 2025, Congressman Fields has continued to
prioritize education by authoring legislation aimed at supporting educators,
strengthening early childhood education, and expanding access and affordability. His
education-focused efforts include:

  • H.R. 5084 – Teacher Loan Forgiveness Enhancement Act, which would forgive
all undergraduate student loans for individuals who teach for eight consecutive
    years in public education, helping recruit and retain qualified educators;
  • H.R. 6634, legislation to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to establish a
refundable childhood education tax credit with monthly advance payments,
providing families with up to $667 per month ($8,000 per year) to offset early
childhood education costs and increase access to affordable programs; and
  • Supporting Teachers Through Tax Fairness Act (forthcoming), which would
make the first $50,000 of a public educator’s salary tax-exempt, helping improve
teacher affordability while strengthening the pipeline of future educators.
Through his weekly classroom visits, Congressman Fields will not only engage students
in conversations about leadership, public service, and the responsibilities of citizenship,
but will also offer real-world insight into the legislative process and empower students
    to actively pursue civic participation.
“Our students are not just the future of our democracy. They are active participants in it
today,” Fields added. “By visiting these 52 schools, we are investing in education, civic
understanding, and leadership that will shape our communities, state, and nation for
    generations.”
The Congress to the Classroom series will begin this month and continue throughout the
year, with school visits being scheduled across Louisiana’s Sixth District. Scheduled visits
    can be found on fields.house.gov.
