August 15 is a. special day in the Roman Catholic Church as it celebrates the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also a day celebrated by those who celebrate their Acadian heritage. In celebration a Eucharistic procession takes place along Bayou Teche from Leonville to St. Martinville which retraces the voyage of the Acadians over 250 years ago.
On Saturday the town of Leonville was abuzz with activity as hundreds of visitors lined the banks of Bayou Teche to witness the start of the boat procession which began after a Mass at St. Leo’s Catholic Church and a procession to the public boat ramp where the boats were moored. The boats departed mid morning and would be stopping at Catholic churches along the bayou where the faithful would disembark for Benediction and the recitation of the holy rosary.
