An additional four Opelousas High football players signed college scholarships Wednesday morning, giving the program an overall seven signees from a class that finished their four years with a 36-15 record and a state championship.
Seniors Chris Rideau, Zack Malveaux, D’Shaun Ford and Johnathan Ford declared their intentions to play football collegiately with family members, OHS coaches, classmates and administrators attending.
In December teammates Corey Amos, Landon Hammond and Kyran Moore separately signed scholarships.
Tigers’ head football coach Jimmy Zachery, Jr., said sending seven players to play collegiately speaks for itself.
“At the end of the day, this group of seniors that we’ve had in our program for four years have given themselves quite a run. They’re state champions. I first met with all of them in the eighth grade and told them that we could win a state championship at Opelousas High and they believed in that. This moment (on Wednesday) is a result of the hard work they have put in,” said Zachery.
Here’s a snapshot of each of signee:
Chris Rideau (OL, 6-2, 280 Tuskegee University) – Rideau is an all-state academic lineman and four year starter, who provided organization for the offense. Zachery thinks Rideau could play center in college.
Zack Malveaux (WR, 5-10, 155 Southern University) – Malveaux was the quarterback starter for three seasons. He was the team total offense leader all three years. Zachery says Malveaux was the offense team leader.
D’Shaud Ford (RB, 5-11, 225, UL-Monroe) – Ford was the single season and career rushing leader at Opelousas. His size and power, Zachery says Ford will be utilized best in a single back college offense.
Jonathan Ford (DL 6-0, 275 Southern University) – A hard to block lineman who has speed and strength that will make him versatile as a college player, says Zachery.
Corey Amos (OLB 6-4, 210, Ole Miss) – A long rangy linebacker who can run and tackle. Amos had a number of Division 1 offers that included Penn State, Mississippi State, USC and Alabama.
Landon Hammond (CB 6-1, 185, Tulane) – Hammond, who had numerous D-! Offers, is a rangy defensive back that Zachery feels will be an outstanding cover guy on the back end of a defense. Zachery feels that Hammond has the physical frame that can add 20 pounds.
Kyran Moore (S 6-1, 175, Stephen F. Austin) – Moore might have been the best player in a talented Opelousas coverage group. Zachery feels Moore, known for his hitting ability, will play safety in college.
