Local historian, archivist and genealogist Marie Marcel was the guest of the Opelousas Rotary Club at their weekly meeting held Tuesday. Marcel, who researched the Opelousas Massacre over a period of 12 plus years, presented her interpretation of the event by studying news articles from the 1868 event and interviewing descendants of persons involved in the uprising. The Opelousas Massacre occurred on Sept. 28, 1868. A memorial event to obvserve the anniversay will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28, beginning at 6 pm on the grounds of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse.
