Narcotics Investigation Finds Suspect Committed Suicide

DECEASED:
Casey Dwayne Owens, 42 years old
138 Saylock Lane
Opelousas, LA 70570

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz reports, “For about one year, our Narcotics Detectives have been
investigating the residence of 138 Saylock Lane and the movement of large amounts of
Fentanyl. This investigation culminated in obtaining a Search Warrant for the home and
sufficient probable cause to arrest Casey Dwayne “Gator” Owens.” Sheriff Guidroz explains,
“As is policy, our Narcotics Detectives combined with our SWAT Unit to execute the Search
Warrant. Owens is known by law enforcement to resist with violence, necessitating every
precaution. Our Deputies went to the residence and initiated, through knocking on the door,
loud speaker and cell phone communications attempts to speak to Owens and direct him to
peacefully exit the home. These attempts went on for more than 30 minutes, to no avail. The
door was then breached by Narcotics Detectives, assisted by the SWAT Unit. A robot was
placed in the home until determined safe, then entry was made by the Deputies. Regrettably,
Owens was found on the floor of the bedroom, apparently deceased.” Sheriff Guidroz
continues, “Our Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was called in to process the scene. The
St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office was notified, and a representative came to the scene. It was
determined by the Coroner’s Office that Owens died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot
wound. Once the scene was cleared, the Narcotics Detectives completed execution of the
search warrant and seized the following;
