The Opelousas Police Department has issued an updated statement from investigators who feel there is no credible evidence that retaliatory gang violence is expected to occur following a Tuesday afternoon midtown shooting that left one person dead and another hospitalized.
Despite multiple social media claims of imminent gang violence purportedly scheduled to occur in Opelousas due to the shooting, Police Chief Graig LeBlanc says that the remarks posted on social media are creating “unnecessary panic” among city residents.
LeBlanc said the investigation of the incident that occurred in the 400 block of West Grolee Street reportedly occurred due to a conflict between individuals who might be from neighboring parishes.
The unnamed victim who survived the shooting was originally listed in critical condition, but the condition of the individual, OPD investigators have said, has been upgraded to stable.
At this point OPD has not revealed the name of each shooting victim or any suspects considered related to the case.
LeBlanc said that the homicide that occurred on Tuesday was the first recorded in Opelousas this year.
OPD however has investigated and made several arrests in a pair of separate shootings that have involved both adults and juveniles during the past two weeks.
