Opelousas Catholic head football coach Cullen Matherne is looking for home game sites after he was told on Monday that Donald Gardner Stadium would not be able to host any 2025 football games until at least Week 6.

Matherne said during an interview with St. Landry Now.com that he has been told by school administrative officials that OCS will have to look for places to host Week 2 and 3 home games this year since Donald Gardner Stadium won’t be available.

“Right now we are looking for schools that have turf football fields. No one is going to let you use their grass fields, so right now we are contacting programs close by to see if we can play there early in the season,” Matherne said during the interview.

Matherne said OCS has good working relationships with programs at Teurlings Catholic in Lafayette and Carencro High, so if those two fields are ready, the Vikings might be able to play there against East Beauregard in Week 2 and Port Barre the following week.

OCS is scheduled to open the season at Iota High.

There are contingency plans, said Opelousas city parks and recreation director Chris Rideau, to play the annual six-team public school jamboree set for Aug. 29 at another stadium in the Donald Gardner Stadium facility is not ready.
