It’s been a busy four days for St. Landry Parish government as the diversified agenda for workers and administration has included transporting dumpsters to the parish landfill, renting a facility for a large concert and attending to assist with flooding and cleanups south of Opelousas.
Parish president Jessie Bellard said on Monday night that recent drought conditions have helped reduce the severity of flooding that has inundated St. Landry this past weekend.
Parish Flooding
However parish work crews were engaged on Sunday with flooding abatement and tree cutting off Montgomery Road, which Bellard indicated has developed into a troublesome area recently due to high water conditions.
A section of the U.S.182 located inside the Eunice city limits, has continued to flood due to the series of heavy rains, Bellard said.
“The water in one area (of Eunice) comes up real fast, but it also goes down real fast,” Bellard pointed out.
Mother’s Day Concert
On Sunday the Mother’s Day Boosie Badazz concert at the St. Landry Ag Arena attracted about 1,500 spectators, according to Bellard.
Despite the large crowd size, Bellard said there were no reported incidents as the concert, which started at 9 am, concluded at around 7:30 pm.
“There weren’t any problems. There was security and the fact that we pointed out that there was a zero tolerance for any misbehavior. I think these were the reasons for that,” Bellard said during an interview with St. Landry Now.com.
The popular rapper, who staged concerts in Opelousas early in his career, paid the parish a rental fee for use of the facility, while the Boosie Badazz group collected the admission costs, Bellard said.
Lil’ Boosie, who has changed his stage name, received a parish proclamation earlier this month as Bellard designated May 10 as Boosie Badazz Day.
Vendors located on the grounds were paid by the patrons for food and beverages, explained Bellard.
Dumpster Pickups
The roaming dumpster collections set for 8 am until 6 pm are provided by the parish government and expected to continue on Thursday of each month in Leonville, according to a schedule provided to St. Landry Now.com last week by the parish government.
Dumpsters are expected to arrive at a 7420 address on La. 93.
Collections for the Port Barre/Krotz Springs are set for the third week of each month at 218 Pernie Bailey Road, while the final week of each month will have pickups for Cankton/Lewisburg at 1011 Highway 357.
There will also be scheduled Melville collections at 129 North Gum Street during Week 2, the schedule shows.
Bellard said he was encouraged by the amount of trash collected last Thursday in Eunice when work crews loaded three dumpsters full of trash, said Bellard.
The dumpsters once filled had their loads hauled to the St. Landry Parish solid waste landfill in Beggs, Bellard noted.
