The preseason strategy for the Port Barre High football program aimed at giving the Red Devils’ defense a needed rest.

That plan moved into action successfully on Thursday night as the Devils defeated Crowley High 27-13 at Gardner Memorial Stadium.

Port Barre accumulated about 350 yards of total offense, said Devils’ head coach Brent Angelle, but more importantly Angelle said his offense orchestrated a time of possession masterpiece.

“Our defense has been on the field a lot in the past, so we decided to be more of a ground and pound-type of offense and hopefully get better clock management,” Angelle said.

Crowley ran only seven plays in the first half, while Port Barre took 36 snaps while compiling 119 rushing yards which led to a 7-0 advantage at the intermission.

“We didn’t get off the field on defense and when we had it on offense, we didn’t move the ball well,” Crowley head football coach Eric Cooley told the Crowley Post Signal.

Port Barre ran 68 plays throughout the four quarters.

Bailey Rideaux, a converted tight end, scored on a 1-yard run to end a 60-yard, 15-play drive and provide the Devils with the one touchdown first half lead.

In the third quarter Tylus Metrejean scored with five minutes remaining to keep the Devils in front, 14-7.

Metrejean later ran for a 58-yard score to put the Devils up 21-7 and Benton Agelle connected on a 30-yard field goal to make it 24-7.

Rideaux rushed for 114 on 13 carries, while Metrejean ran for 83 yards on 10 attempts. Metrejean also completed six passes for 77.

Angelle said the victory was an elixir for a team.

“I like everything about it. It was the first game of the season, a road game and after going 1-9 last year, we needed it. I thought it was well-deserved and well-needed,” Angelle said.

Port Barre is scheduled to host Beau Chene next Friday night.
