Prudhomme Home Hosts 250th Event
Form Staff Reports
The 250th anniversary of the nation will be recognized at the historic Michel Prudhomme Home beginning at 10 am on Saturday with performances, artisan demonstrations and a recognition of how local residents played a part in the American Revolution.
A nationally-recognized troupe will demonstrate dances that were popular in America during the time of the Revolution, while guests will be treated to methods used by artisans to create items used during the late 18th century.
The free program will also illustrate the role that the 1776 Opelousas-area militia played in the Revolution as the volunteer army marched towards Baton Rouge.
A list naming the members of the Opelousas militia is displayed on a mantle above the fireplace of the Prudhomme Home believed to have been built in the late 1790’s.
The house is placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located at 1128 Prudhomme Circle, which adjoins the entrance to Opelousas General Hospital off Prudhomme Lane.
