It was a picnic perfect Sunday for guests who took advantage of low humidity, cooler temperatures and a delicious, annual fundraiser brunch hosted by the Preservationists Of St. Landry Inc.

Chef Jason Huget, award-winning chef-owner of the Steamboat Warehouse in Washington and his team provided the culinary expertise for the paid event whose proceeds will be used to help fund ongoing roof, drainage and upper gallery repairs for the house that was constructed at the end of the 18th century.

The Preservationists, who this year celebrate their 50th anniversary of owning the Prudhomme House, depend upon donations from similar events in order to maintain the house, which is considered the oldest in Opelousas and perhaps St. Landry Parish.

On Sunday approximately 50 guests were treated to breakfasts of chicken and andouille gumbo, biscuits, smoked bacon, breakfast sausage, potatoes, scrambled eggs, Bourque’s boudin and homemade peach cobbler.

Preservationist members also served as waiters, as they took the breakfast buffet choices of their guests to the outdoor tables that featured glassware, linen tablecloths and silverware located underneath tents provided by St. Landry Parish government.

Beverages that included wines, water, coffee, orange juice were served with the served brunches.

Many of those arriving quickly ordered glasses filled with the popular Prudhomme House mimosas mixed with orange juice and champagne. After they finished eating, the guests had the option of taking tours of the house and property that once briefly served as headquarters for Union soldiers who occupied Opelousas during the Civil War.

Later this year the Preservationists plan to celebrate their half century of Prudhomme House ownership with a fall picnic and the annual membership meeting that this year will honor those who previously served on the board of directors for the organization.
