How much will eventually be spent to mitigate at least seven leased properties owned by the St. Landry Parish School District along a Bayou Courtableau levee could be determined when board members convene for a regular January meeting.

Board members discussed the Building, Lands and Sites Committee issue at length on Monday night, but failed to reach a conclusion.

A motion to delay a final decision on how to proceed with the clean-up process failed to collect enough votes. The Board decided later to move the matter to the January meeting for further consideration.

Operations Director Claudia Blanchard told the Board that Mike & Son, LLC., has submitted a $14,500 low price quote for clearing debris left at seven of the currently vacant properties.

Blanchard added that two other companies, which she did not name, offered to provide similar debris removal services for $18,500 and $27,000.

During discussions, several board members questioned whether there might be more sites that needed to be cleaned, rather than the seven identified originally by District property manager Don Leger during the November meetings.

Board members Randy Wagley and Mary Ellen Donatto suggested that it might be necessary for Leger to return to the next board meeting in order to determine if there are perhaps more properties that need to be cleared.

Blanchard told the Board that Leger is attempting to be prudent with the District finances that are dedicated for managing the levee properties.

“I think that (Leger) is just trying to stay within a certain amount,” Blanchard said.

Board members Anthony Standberry and Klye Boss said that in order to lease the plighted tracts to prospective renters, a clean-up procedure is needed.

“I think we need to move forward and get started with cleaning up the camps and making them attractive,” said Standberry
