On this day, June 19, 2025, St. Landry Now, on line newspaper, honors Rebecca Henry. Henry is well known in the St. Landry Parish area as a community active who brings the Creole heritage to the forefront. The Juneteenth celebration is only one of the many events Rebecca organizes each year to keep the Creole culture alive in Opelousas and St. Landry Parish. Juneteenth Independence Day, is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is observed annually on June 19th, marking the date in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday became a federal holiday in 2021. Rebecca is also the founder of Creole Heritage Folklife Center, where she holds the annual summer enrichment program for school age children where they are given a life lesson in Creole culture. Rebecca also stages the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and parade in Opelousas concluding with a ceremony at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. St. Landry Now celebrates you and thanks you Rebecca for a lifetime of preserving the Creole culture and heritage.
