Looking Ahead: Most St. Landry Parish football teams would be envious of the experience possessed this season at St. Edmund. Head coach James Shiver has 18 senior players who have an abundance of experience in the program. Shiver has copious arena football coaching experience and a 2024 team that has an experienced quarterback and wide receivers. The Blue Jays may appear to be a Wing-T formation team, but St. Edmund plans to throw it around more than just occasionally.
Looking Back: St. Edmund finished 7-4 last year and at midseason the Jays had the best record in the parish after five consecutive victories. SEHS had a running game that was among the best in the state last year, but the Jays competed in a competitive Class 1A district to help offset that advantage. The post season for St. Edmund lasted one game.
Preseason Standouts: Kane West (QB), Blake Moran (WR), JP Fruge (LB), Haden Lasage (DT), Alex Ortego (LB-WR), Ian Ryder (LB-TE), Seth Aucoin (CB-FS), Henry Summerlin (RB-WR), Clay Aguillard (OL).
Offense: Spread
Defense: Multiple 3-4, 4-3
What The Coach Says: “I think we are adding more balance this year. We should be maybe 50-50. We have some really good running backs and some great wide receivers. We have some great speed, guys like Seth Aucoin and Blake Moran, who run a 4.4 or 4.3. We have players back who have all been starters and they have experienced a lot of growing up. Our players have been together and this is a close group.” – James Shiver
Players Comments: “You going to see us use a lot of spread. We’ve got some explosive plays, but we are still going to mix up. You need that to throw off the defense. Overall we are going to be good, because we didn’t lose many people.” Blake Moran
Players Comments:”We are doing some different things. I think our routes will be easier for me to read. One thing about our offense is we are going to be explosive.” Kane West
Players Comments: “One thing we have is our experience. Our defense has been simple to pick up and that is going to make us effective with it.” Haden Lasage
Players Comments: “I think we are going to be real good. We have a lot of experience. Our team has been together for such a long time and we all get along.” J.P. Fruge
Further Review: The Jays play in a large district with programs that have dominated the top tier of the league for several previous seasons. St. Edmund has four non-district games and each of those are clearly winnable, presuming the Jays are not consumed with injuries. Offensively the Jays nickname their offense the T-Gun, which implies St. Edmund will be entertaining. If the defense coalesces, the Jays could make a run at a district title.
