On Friday, August 30, 2024, from 11 am to noon, the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce and South Louisiana Community College (SoLAcc) will host “Reentry Gumbo,” an event addressing the critical issue of reintegrating individuals with criminal records into the community. Taking place at the SoLAcc campus in Opelousas, LA, the presentation will explore the essential elements of successful reentry, focusing on the vital roles employers and community members play.
Led by Scott E. Peyton, Regional Director for Right On Crime, the presentation will draw parallels between the creation of gumbo and the reentry process. Just as a gumbo requires a balanced mix of ingredients, successful reentry depends on collaboration among employers, community organizations, and individuals. Employer engagement is likened to the roux in gumbo—without it, the reentry process lacks stability and depth.
The event will highlight the benefits employers gain from hiring individuals with criminal records, including access to a loyal workforce and potential tax credits. It will also emphasize the importance of community support and nonprofit involvement, essential for creating a comprehensive reentry support network.
“Reentry Gumbo” is more than an event; it’s a call to action for employers, community leaders, and citizens to work together to build safer, stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
