Trashing Opelousas

Some Opelousas residents need to consider adjusting their attitudes when it comes to discarding trash, says Mayor Julius Alsandor.
Alsandor unloaded on littering perpetrators Tuesday night during the October Board of Aldermen meeting held at City Hall.
Although he has addressed the Opelousas discarded trash issue several times during his administration, Alsandor repeated his concerns after apparently witnessing the aftermath of what he described as a “parade” that occurred in the city at some point last week.
Alsandor did not identify the parade, but the Opelousas High Homecoming parade moved through parts of the city last Thursday evening.
Parade route areas, Alsandor said, contained evidence of leftover food and other trash apparently dropped by some parade spectators who were barbecuing and eating during the event.
Alsandor described a sidewalk and street debris scene that also included 12 beer cans left at one street corner.
“What I saw was uncalled for. If it had rained, that trash would have been in the cutters,” said Alsandor.
Alsandor pointed out that some people tend to leave their fast food bags of trash in the street, rather than waiting to properly dispose of them later on.
The city, Alsandor said, has often been plagued at different times with clogged drains and canals due to persons who promiscuously dump their unwanted items.
Properly placing trash is also necessary, said Alsandor, in order to help city workers and keep sewerage and drainage free of issues, said Alsandor.
