An 0-3 start has helped spawn a six-game win streak.

Now Westminster Christian Academy is looking to finish running the remainder of their District 6-1A table.

The Crusaders took another step towards a potential second straight district championship on Friday night by defeating St. Edmund 21-8 in a league contest played at Blue Jay Field.

That victory creates a final stage this Friday night in Ville Platte as WCA meets Sacred Heart (9-0) in a Trojan Field contest that will decide the district title.

WCA and Sacred Heart are both undefeated after 6-1A games.

Westminster head coach Byron Porter said the first three games of the season provided the Crusaders with a chance to prepare for a competitive district.

“Those three games (against Kentwood, Lafayette Christian and Live Oak) were tough and pretty brutal, but we got through that without many injuries. What it did was prepare us and give us some answers about our team,” Porter said.

It also showed the Crusaders the physical side of football, something WCA needed to encounter the teams in 6-1A and again Friday night.

“The game against St. Edmund was pretty physical and like our other games with them it was pretty tight,” Porter said.

How It Happened

The Crusaders scored three unanswered touchdowns after St. Edmund took a second quarter lead on an 18-yard scoring pass from quarterback Camdyn Loewer to Bryer Guillory.

WCA erased the 8-0 lead with 5:05 left before halftime as running back Kyle Horde completed a nine-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard run. The first of three successful Aiden Thomas extra points allowed the Crusaders to pull within a point (8-7).

With 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter quarterback Garrett Noel completed a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Mason Alexander after the Crusaders recovered a bad snap on a fourth down punt attempt.

It remained 14-8 until 2:17 was left in the third quarter as Noel scored on an 11-yard quarterback run. The score completed a 10-play, 76-yard drive.

The fourth quarter, like the first period, was scoreless.

Statistical Side

Noel completed 7-of-14 passes for 118 yards, while running nine times for another 28.

WCA outgained the Jays 173-149 in rushing yardage.

Running back Jack Hunt gained 75 yards on 11 attempts, while Kyle Horde managed 54 on 16 attempts.

St. Edmund (5-3, 3-3) received 151 rushing yards from running back Cooper Berzas, while Loewer obtained 34 off 10 carries. Lower completed five-of-20 passes with two interceptions.

The Blue Jays were bothered by a lost fumble and two interceptions. Horde and Cameron Redding recorded Crusaders’ interceptions.
