Week 10: District Titles Solved

If a district championship is the goal for any of the nine St. Landry Parish teams playing football, then Week 10 of the regular season contains four quarters of meaningful competition.

Opelousas High and Northwest have opportunities to capture outright league titles in home games scheduled Friday night.

The Raiders and Opelousas are both undefeated in their respective districts.

In the district that involves Opelousas Catholic, Westminster Christian Academy and St. Edmund, what’s still at stake is second place.

Catholic High-Pointe Coupee is set to host OCS Friday night. OCS has lost to WCA and St. Edmund, but CHPC has defeated Westminster and St. Edmund.

An OCS win would potentially boost the Vikings’ power points, but CHPC will still be the league champion after defeating WCA and St. Edmund which will apparently play for second place.

The Vikings could finish fourth in the district.

Northwest-Iota

Statistically the Northwest-Iota game set in Prairie Ronde features a classic offense and defense matchup.

Northwest has allowed no fewer than 26 points in the last five games, while the Iota has not less than 20 since starting league games.

Iota is on an eight-game winning streak, while the Raiders have won five in a row.

The Raiders shared a district title last year with Iota and Church Point.

However Northwest head coach Chris Edwards thinks a championship trophy is important for any high school football program

“At the start of the season when your team talks about goals, the district championship is always one of them, so why wouldn’t that be important?” Edwards said.

Beau Chene-Opelousas

Opelousas, which tied for the district title last year, is on a four-game winning streak after starting the season 1-3. The Tigers averaged 33 points a game during October.

“This is what our team has been playing for this year, a chance to show that we are the best team in the district along with a championship. You want to have that on your resume going into the playoffs,” said OHS head coach Jimmy Zachery, Jr.

Beau Chene is on course to experience a third consecutive one-win season. The Gators are 0-3 in district games and have scored 20 points in the last four contests.

Opelousas Catholic-CHPC

The Vikings have undergone an offensive reset due to injuries and illnesses the last four weeks and OCS is prepared to close out the regular season in New Roads.

Vikings’ quarterback Kross Gillen is healthy again and OCS head coach Cullen Matherne feels his team is at full strength.

“We’ve had some guys really step up for us when we had some players missing. At one point we had nine starters out. It’s been an interesting year for us, we are primarily healthy now,” Matherne said.

Westminster is on a five-game winning streak. The Crusaders have been defeated only by CPCH. Powered by an offense that ranks No. 1 in parishwide scoring, St. Edmund is 8-1.
