The city of Opelousas lived up to its name as the Zydeco capitol of the world when the 40th annual Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival closed its four day event Saturday with the music festival featuring some of the biggest names in Zydeco entertaining a jam packed Yamatorium of Zydeco music lovers. The annual event began at the Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center with a press conference on August 4 announcing the event schedule. The music portion of the festival got underway Friday night at Evangeline Downs with a kick-off dance featuring Lil Nate and the Zydeco Big Timers. A mostly rainy Saturday didn’t prevent the music fans from attending the Zydeco Breakfast and dancing to the music of Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys. On the agenda this year also was the makers market held in conjunction with the Zydeco Breakfast. The final event before the beginning of the music festival was a motor parade that began at Le Vieux Village concluding at the Yamatorium.
