According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “On July 26, 2022, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics detectives received information that a subject was attempting to sell a stolen vehicle and organized the purchase from the Pasadena, Texas area, where the vehicle was located..”

Detectives spoke to a male, who was identified as Charles Houpt, and arranged the purchase of a maroon 2008 Honda Accord for $2,500.  Charles Houpt agreed to bring the vehicle from Pasadena, Texas to St. Landry Parish.

While at the designated sale location, detectives observed a white male arrive in a maroon vehicle.  Detectives noticed the white male acting suspicious and ran the license plate displayed on the vehicle, at which time, the vehicle came back stolen. Detectives made contact with the driver, who was identified as Charles Houpt.  Detectives verified the vehicle was stolen from the Bellaire, Texas area.  During a search of the vehicle, detectives located a portable police radio with a lapel microphone.  After running the radio through the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Communications Department, it was learned the radio was stolen from the Dallas Police Department.

Upon questioning by detectives, it was learned that Charles Houpt bought the vehicle 2 days prior from a person in Pasadena, Texas, and was aware that it was stolen at the time of purchase.

On July 27, 2022, Charles Houpt was transported to the St. Landry Parish Jail and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and illegal possession of stolen things.

Charles Houpt has an extensive criminal history which includes assault causing bodily harm to a family member, driving while intoxicated and grand theft between $20,000 – $100,000.  He has also stated that he was paroled in 2018 for grand theft between $20,000 – $100,000.
