The Opelousas Civic League and Abdalla’s Department Show held a unique style show at the Indian Hills Country Club in Opelousas on April 11, 1961. What made it unique were the fashions that were modeled.
The models showed what people wore in the US to play on the beach in the 1800s, and also what they were wearing in 1961. The early swimsuits were copies of the types worn in the previous century, and Abdalla’s provided the swim suites worn in the early 1960s.
The musical entertainment for that evening followed the old-fashioned theme with a barber shop quarter composed of Charles Hiller, Algy Rose, Mike Genovese and Milton Delmas performing for the audience. Mason Perrault was commentator and Linda Rose was pianist.
This photo from the past, sent to St. Landry Now by Jody Powell, shows the models for that evening wearing the old fashioned swimsuits. Front sitting: Harvey Owens and Charles Lyman; back row (l-r): Evelyn Norman, Doris Perkins, Audrey Bramlette, Nancy Carr, Isabelle Posner, Dee Holloway, and Marian Lyman.
That must have been so much fun!
