The Port Barre Police Department is hosting its annual Law for Paws Spring event on Saturday, April 15th. It will be a family fun day with great food and activities for all to enjoy and it’s all for a great cause!

There will be a rice and gravy cook-off, cornhole tournament, blind draw, face painting and fun jumps for the kids and a petting zoo! Local vendors will also be on-site in the parking lot of the John R. Dupre Municipal Library.

Anyone who would like to participate in the cook-off or as a vendor can contact Nikki Quebedeaux or Leslie Guidry at the police department for registration forms at 337-585-6212.

This Spring event is held in an effort to support the Law for Paws program, established by employees of the Port Barre Police Department. Officers operate an ad-hoc public kennel for strays they find and rescue while they are nursed back to health and then adopted to good homes.

The Humane Society and funding supporters selected the town of Port Barre to receive their first prototype roll out, made out of a container that will be designed to have heating and cooling for their specific needs!

The goal of the program is to provide adequate shelter, food and veterinary care to rescued dogs as well as fund transport so they can be adopted to good homes rather than sent to over-crowded and kill-shelters.

Since the program has been established they have successfully adopted out dogs all over the United States that otherwise may not have had a second chance at life.

A go-fund me account has been created for anyone who would like to make a donation to the program.
