Opelousas-area boy scout Christopher Jesclard (center of photo) was recognized Thursday by St. Landry Parish school officials for his American flag project. Jesclard, a member of Troop 51, is working on his Eagle Scout badge and spearheaded a project which included inspecting the flags and flagpoles at all schools located within the district.
The project included measuring all the flagpoles at the school lengths to determine their proper length in addition to examining the flags used at the schools for proper care. Jesclard told school board members that he was assisted in his project by firefighters from across the District.
Chris Willis, representing the United Parcel Service (at right) presented a $1,000 from UPS to Superintendent Milton Batiste III in order to assist with the flagpole project.
Wills, a military veteran, told school officials that a light is normally provided at schools in order to illuminate the flag during nighttime hours.
