In September, Animal Control was notified of a malnourished and mistreated dog in the Lewisburg area. An Animal Control officer responded to the call and assessed the animal, which was found in a small kennel with no access to food or water. The animal was taken to Animal Control, and after being in their care for a few days, the dog passed away due to malnourishment.
An investigation was conducted by an investigator from the newly developed investigations department in Parish Government. Upon completion of the investigation, a warrant was issued for Michael Hawkins Jr. Age 37, 136 Chachere Road Lot #4, Church Point, LA 70525.
He later turned himself in and was arrested by the St. Landry Parish Government investigator. He was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, LA R.S. 14:102.1 (B)(4).
This new investigations department will be specifically targeting animal crimes, littering, and other parish complaints. Beginning Monday, October 31, St. Landry Parish Government will have two full-time investigators on staff.
Parish President Jessie Bellard urges residents to contact our office, at (337) 948-3688, to report complaints that involve littering, animal cruelty, neglect, or mistreatment. All reports will be investigated and handled accordingly.
