Opelousas, LA — On Saturday, August 12, 2023, St. Landry Parish School Board members and
Superintendent Milton Batiste, III participated in a board retreat held at the St. Landry Pupil Appraisal
Center. The retreat, facilitated by the Louisiana School Boards Association, focused on effective
governance for school boards and the roles and responsibilities of school board members and the
superintendent.
This school board retreat is designed to introduce roles and responsibilities that Louisiana law lays out for
school board members and superintendents, including best practices. It’s important that school board
members and the superintendent prioritize student achievement for all students and that they fully know
their role in cultivating strong, trusting working relationships.
“It’s always good to take a step back and look at our roles in the community and ask how we, as the board
and the superintendent, can expand our efforts in the communities where we live and serve, said Mr. Milton
Batiste III, Superintendent of the St. Landry Parish School Board.
Board retreats offer much in the way of slowing down to carefully evaluate the work of the board and its
accomplishments and goals, as well as develop a roadmap for the future.
“This was the perfect chance for us to come together as a leadership team for focused discussions and
strategic thinking about our future goals,” said Board President Joyce Haynes. “There is rarely enough time
for those types of activities in regular board meetings or committee agendas.”
The St. Landry Parish School Board has 13 board members serving and meets on the 1
st Thursday of each month. For more information, visit www.slpsb.org.
