Students from North Central High School and Port Barre High and middle school were recognized by St. Landry Parish school officials on Thursday night for academic and literary achievements.
Superintendent Milton Batiste III and board members applauded the accomplishments for Port Barre students Anistin Oxford, Cullen Johnson, Coleton Fontenot and Analise Popps.
Historical exhibits that won awards at the regional and state levels that were created by North Central students Chasity Smith, Kaylie Simmons, Eric Fontenot, Micah Dixon, JaNaya Haley, Breanna Tieuel and Aysia Bell were also recognized for state and national accomplishments.
Port Barre
Tenth graders Cullen Johnson and Coleton Fontenot were honored for perfect English-language arts LEAP scores.
Oxford, an 11th grader, received a 31 score on the ACT.
Popps, a middle school seventh grade student, has reached 1.989 million reading words using the Accelerated Reader program,
North Central
Three North Central students are scheduled to compete in the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit entitled “Beyond The Lens; How Lewis Hine Exposed The Child Labor Problem” that Smith, Simmons and Fontenot presented at regional and state judging, will be placed on display at the Smithsonian American History Museum.
Dixon, who placed second and regionals and state, will have a written paper, “Kids Who Changed A Nation: The Children’s March of 1963,” will attend a Washington, D.C. writing workshop and tour the White House on June 17.
A first-place regional exhibit generated by Haley and Tieuel “A Guide To Freedom: The Evolution Of The Green Book-Exhibit,” was a first place regional winner in 2024 that was presented at regional competition.
Bell was a regional qualifier for her written paper and accompanying exhibit that highlights the American Indian movement.
