Westminster Christian Academy school officials announced Thursday night that a pair of private donors have agreed to finance the construction of an eight-lane outdoor track that will encircle the current football field located on campus.

WCA head of school Ray Casey and athletic director Keith Leon said that the initial phase for the track construction could begin next week, with completion scheduled for late July or early August.

Casey unveiled an architectural sketch of the track during an end-of-year athletic highlight function held at the school.

When completed Westminster will have the only currently functional eight-lane outdoor track in St. Landry Parish,

“This track is truly a gift that will impact our current facilities, future families and the St. Landry Parish community. We are so grateful and excited about the impact that this will have on our Crusder athletic program,” Casey said in a press release issued by the school.

Leon told the audience of parents and school athletes that when completed, the track will benefit significantly benefit the school athletic program and provide a potential venue for other parish schools.

“Having a track like this will benefit our whole program. Right now seventy percent of our athletes are involved in track, so this is going to be a very big part of our future. We will also have a track that will be able to host home meets as well as meets for district and regionals. This project is bigger than anything that we have ever done here at the school,” said Leon.

Leon added that the track is expected to become an important revenue source for the school.

Other Athletic Expansions

Leon additionally outlined several other ongoing projects that will upgrade the WCA athletic facilities.

The football program will have a new football scoreboard completed for the start of the 2023 season.

The school gymnasium is scheduled to have new flooring, while there have also been ongoing renovations made to the weight room, Leon said.
