Rosie Ledet leads event at Visitor Center in Opelousas
Veteran accordionist, singer and songwriter Rosie Ledet leads the Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 13 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23, in Opelousas. The monthly jam has free admission and is open to all musicians and fans.
In 1994, Ledet rocked dancehalls with her debut album, “Sweet Brown Sugar.” Her clever, sly and seductive lyrics filled more than a dozen CDs over the next two decades.
A 2001 cover story in New Orleans’ Offbeat magazine, titled “Zydeco Grrrl!,’ sang Ledet’s praises as a standout lyricist in a male-dominated genre. That same year, her album landed in the Top 25 of the blues charts.
Ledet received the Female Vocalist of the Year Award from C.R.E.O.L.E., Inc., a heritage preservation nonprofit based in Lafayette, La.
A native of Church Point, Ledet went on to multiple appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She has toured Europe and Australia and opened shows for James Brown, Bob Dylan, Chaka Khan and other stars.
