Named for Eunice Pharr Duson, the town was founded by St. Landry Parish Sheriff and pioneer land developer C.C. Duson who named it in honor of his second wife.
Eunice was chartered as a village on September 12, 1894, and incorporated as a town on June 4, 1895. It is located in the western part of St. Landry Parish, and is also part of Acadia Parish.
