Individuals With Disabilities Shine Bright
July 11, 2026What started out as a surprise birthday party for Elijah Duplechain erupted into the first ever NEVA Let Your Disabilities Define You festival-party organized by Jamie Cormier. She explained that she wanted to give her friend a surprise party but seeing that July is designated as Disability Pride Month it would be nice for all to celebrate a day of fun and games and hence the first ever NEVA Let Your Disabilities Define You festival-party was held Saturday at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas. Cormier, who organized and promoted the event, made sure it was a day for all to enjoy and to come together as a community. There were games, door prizes, food, vendors, balloon artist, music and a petting zoo. The highlight of the event was the grand parade with Elijah Duplechain serving as grand marshal. A Summer Gathering In Palmetto
July 11, 2026The historic Church of God and Retreat n Palmetto was the site of a four day summer gathering themed the voice of God with guest speaker Rev. Handel Smith along side Church of God and Retreat Pastor Dale Fontenot a humble leader deeply committed to uplifting families and those struggling brokeness and despair. The event focused on strengthening families and bringing hope, healing and renewal to those who feel they have lost everything. Handel Smith alongside Church of God and Retreat Pastor Rev. Dale Fontenot. The humble leaders deeply committed to uplifting families and those struggling with brokeness and despair. The event focused on strengthening families and bringing hope, healing and renewal to those who flelt they have lost everything. Their message was to come experience God's presence by restoring family bonds and shed God's light onto the community, The gathering concludes on Sunday, July 12. July 11, 2026 SLPSS, KS Move Forward BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor The St. Landry Parish School System and the Town of Krotz Springs are proceeding in opposite directions with their educational visions following a decision issued early Friday afternoon by a State District Court judge. For parish school officials, a ruling by Judge Charles Cravins allows the District to close Krotz Springs Elementary, repurpose the campus into a virtual learning academy and transport pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students previously educated there to Port Barre elementary. Krotz Springs town officials say they are continuing with a different educational plan, which at this point includes establishing a state-governed charter school for grades p-k through sixth grade which could open in two years. Following a 20-minute meeting in his chambers with attorneys from both sides, Cravins listened to brief opening arguments and then issued an open court decision which removed a temporary restraining order and dismissed…

July 9, 2026 Parish Foundation Focuses On Health BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor For many St. Landry Parish residents who might be unaware of health care availability, the Jordan Graves non-profit organization is available to provide answers and access. Paula Jordan provided a snapshot at the Tuesday Noon Rotary Club meeting of how the St. Landry Parish-based health care group assists rural community residents with information, testing and screenings for overall livelihood improvements. The Foundation is concerned, Jordan said, with overall wellness and committed to providing healthier lives. Since its inception the Foundation has partnered with the American Lung Association and faith-based organizations like the Knights of St. Peter Clavier, which Jordan said is the largest Catholic lay organization in the world. July 8, 2026CSLED Seeks Expansion BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor The Central St. Landry Economic District is seeking to expand its sales tax collection boundaries along Interstate 49 along with the likely inclusion of the Creswell Lane business district. CSLED members discussed the potential boundary proliferations during a Tuesday afternoon special meeting at the St. Landry Parish Economic District headquarters. Chairman Buddy Helton, who was reelected to the position he has held since 2015, indicated that the economic district which charges an extra 1-cent for purchases made from businesses located along I-49 south of Opelousas, discussed with board members the prospect of moving the taxing district further north and south along the interstate. The current plan, which will need approval from the parish and city officials, includes increasing the interstate service road boundaries to the Nuba exit and southward to the Sunset-Grand Coteau. July 6, 2026Football Changes In St. Landry BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor The first 2026 high school football games occupy a distant horizon, but during the past several months, the preseason coaching carousel has been spinning continuously in St. Landry Parish. Several parish high school teams have had their new staff in place for offseason conditioning while others, like Port Barre have experienced an unusual amount of turmoil. Perhaps the biggest coaching changes occur in Districts 6-1A and 4-3A. In addition to several new coaches, some districts have added either new teams or once familiar opponents. Here’s what has happened already as the 2026 football season begins to unfold. OPELOUSAS CATHOLIC: Cullen Matherne is no longer the head football coach after three seasons on Prudhomme Lane. The Vikings will be coached this year by Kent Masson, the running backs coach formerly at Teurlings Catholic. Expect Masson to oversee the Vikings’ wrestling program. Matherne…
