As a high school player that normally blocked or either tackled the opposition, Brenn Ray is preparing to enter a different dimension when he first steps onto the Louisiana Christian University practice field.
At Westminster Christian Academy, Ray was a standout offensive and defensive lineman who for the past two years was prominently featured as an all-district and performer on the St. Landry Now.com all-parish team.
Once at LCU, Ray thinks he could experience a position conversion and become a tight end or an H-Back-fullback, who can also catch passes.
Ray, who started most of his four seasons at Westminster, is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, the perfect size for someone who could be moving to another spot along the offensive line or even in the backfield, said WCA head football coach Byron Porter.
“We and the coaches at LCU both feel that (Ray) is athletic enough to make a move to tight end. The coaches there like his frame and his athleticism. He plays baseball (at WCA), so he has other skills. They think they can develop Brenn into a pretty solid player,” added Porter.
On this year’s all-district team, Ray was chosen on both sides of the ball, something that Porter said LCU might want to consider when defining a spot on the roster.
“I think they might also want to look at (Ray) as someone on defense. I thought he can be a good position player at defensive end,” Porter said.
Ray said he is preparing to play wherever the LCU coaches feel he is most suitable.
“I’m used to blocking and I think that I am going to do that a lot over there. However if I need to play tight end and do some catching, I am ready for that too. I’m working on the routes right now,” Ray said.
