SLPSB Deals With Serious Debt

June 3, 2026
SLPSB Deals With Serious Debt BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor St. Landry Parish school board members appeared stunned Tuesday night as they listened to Finance Director Shaun Grantham tell them that financially the District is “living check to check and bleeding cash.” Board members listened without comment as Grantham, in a prepared statement, delivered the financial reality check which indicates the school system is scheduled to end a 2025-26 budgetary year June 30 with a $3.94 million debt along with an anticipated $18.17 general fund loss.  What that means, said superintendent Milton Batiste III, is the District will now discuss ways of dealing with the substantial revenue loss, a situation which could include school closures and consolidations, staff reductions and other cost cutting measures. The Board will convene into a financial retreat June 13 in order to begin proposing solutions. Grantham said the District is unable to amend the general fund…

Richard Seeks Changes

June 2, 2026
Richard Seeks Changes BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor Joey Richard has focused on Opelousas and the St. Landry Parish community for several years and by next year, the Landry Street barber may have the opportunity to solidify his ideas for change. It’s been no secret that Richard, who now has his own hair-cutting business, plans to run this year for the District 40 seat in the Louisiana legislature. That goal was presented again on Tuesday as Richard somewhat outlined his plan for improving parish wide conditions economically and socially. Richard hasn’t reached the point where he is handing out election cards with his photo and his name. However if he does represent most of St. Landry while in Baton Rouge, Richard explained that he plans to focus his legislative efforts on improving gun violence and infrastructure issues such as water quality, water leaks and improving streets. As a small business owner…

Ulysse Joubert Remembered

June 1, 2026
While workng as a photographer for the Daily World and St. Landry Now I could always depend on Park Vista Elementary for a feature picture and story thanks to Principal Ulysse Joubert. And there were many PVE photos over the years. Ulysse would never forget to let m know when some event was coming up at the school, and there were many that always included his beloved students. Some of my best features were the school's Mardi Gras parade and chicken run, Ulysse saw to it that the Mamou Mardi Gras group would bring their live chickens for the kids to chase around the school yard and of course the school's Mardi Gras Parade that rivaled many local parades in the area. There was the school's International Student Day where foreign students would highlight the foods of their countries. Every graduation season he would welcome back graduating seniors that began…

New Map Divides Parish Again

May 31, 2026
New Map Divides Parish Again BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor A new U.S. Congressional map for St. Landry – at least until the next federal lawsuit is decided – has been approved by Louisiana lawmakers, a configuration that appears to slice through the heart of the parish. The northern part of the parish in addition to portions of the Port Barre area and all of Washington, Melville, Palmetto and Morrow will seemingly be represented by whoever is elected in Congressional District 5, Congressman Clay Higgins, a former parish sheriff’s deputy, will represent the rest of the parish, according to a redrawn map approved by the Louisiana House and Senate and signed by Gov. Jeff Landry. The final Congressional map, which will apparently soon be challenged in the courts by multiple plaintiffs, moves most of St. Landry out of District 6, which was previously represented by Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge and Mike…
